Looking for a competitive leg up early on in 2019? Nail your employee experience..

Understanding and putting together the jigsaw pieces of a rounded employee experience is really important in the new world of work. Statistics show that happy employees are up to 20% more productive at work, whereas unhappy employees on average take 15 more sick days each year than the average worker (Fahy, 2017).

Getting the employee experience should be solidly part of your strategy in 2019…..

Think of the employee experience as a delicious pie where some ingredients are more important than others. All ingredients are needed, but if you leave out or scrimp on the important ones, the whole pie doesn’t taste the same.

So in a nutshell how do you create a rocking employee experience?

Start by finding out what your employees want and need:

  • Gather information from surveys, focus groups

  • Be proactive in your approach

  • Get the fundamentals right first (the core ingredients of the pie) eg equitable and fair pay and working hours etc before exploring other attraction and retention elements

  • Look to best practice elsewhere

Set employee experience goals backed by timeline milestones:

  • How do you want employees to feel about coming to work/contributing to a team?

  • What kind of experience and culture do you want to be remembered for?

  • Provide learning opportunities for both leaders and employees

  • Seek and provide feedback.

  • Aim to create fulfillment at work. Fulfilled workers perform better.

  • Develop a thorough on boarding experience that sets the scene early. Remember…initial perception of the organisation can set a positive of negative tone.

Review, review, review:

  • Spot surveys are a great way to check if employees are still engaged and happy

  • Communication remains the key though. Be open and transparent about any plans to change existing employee conditions and routines.

  • Learn from past mistakes made and adjust where necessary

The effort in getting it right will pay you back via productivity and customer satisfaction rewards. Importantly it could also provide a competitive edge putting you ahead of the business pack in 2019.
